Ever since Kilian Jornet was seen pouring olive oil into his flasks during his States of Elevation expedition, the ultra-trail world has been buzzing. The reactions have ranged from admiration to outright dismissal:

“He’s a freak of nature.”
“Don’t copy him — it won’t work for the average person.”

And yet, the same people who say fat fueling is useless will applaud triathletes consuming 120g of carbs per hour, urging you to “train your gut” to handle it.

Let’s be honest: a lot of people treat nutrition like religion — rigid beliefs, cherry-picked facts, and zero nuance. That’s not science. Real science is about testing, measuring, learning, and adapting. And while data matters, so does how you feel — because we’re still light-years away from measuring every metabolic shift happening in the body.

We’re not here to tell you fats are the only answer. But to claim they have no place in endurance performance? That’s just lazy thinking.

Fat is the body’s preferred fuel for long efforts. It's not just about calories — fats support satiety, gastrointestinal comfort (especially under high acid stress), and more stable energy output. If you’ve never tried it, test it. Track it. Feel it. Then come talk to us. We’re not afraid of data — but we also value lived experience. That’s how we design and improve our products: with real-world feedback and a long-term view of performance and health.

Now, let’s talk carbs.

Yes, high-carb strategies (90–120g/hr) have delivered impressive short-term results, and we at BSE are closely studying this trend. But let’s not ignore the gray area. When athletes start consuming more than 60–90g of carbs per hour, most of that intake isn’t fueling muscle work — it’s triggering a neurological response, what many describe as a sugar high.

And that chase for a “boost” feels uncomfortably close to doping logic — seeking stimulation rather than sustainable performance. We don’t yet know the long-term consequences of pushing carbohydrate intake to those extremes, but one thing is clear: it doesn’t feel healthy, and it doesn’t feel right.

That said — we’re not against carbs. In fact, our latest formulas contain 12g of carbs per serving. Why? Because every macronutrient — fat, carbs, protein — has its place and time. This isn’t about tribalism. It’s about using the right tool for the job.

There’s more than one tool in the toolbox. Don’t limit yourself. Plan your fueling strategy using all energy substrates. Don’t blindly follow trends. You’re unique. Every race is unique.

If you dont want to try a different way and prefer to listen to sales people the as we say in my pueblo : “Cada quien puede hacer de su culo un papalote.”
(Look it up.)

Just don’t preach dogma.
Enjoy the sacrifice.
